Unlocking the Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly potent, natural, concentrated extracts of plants that offer many benefits. They are used for relaxation, pain and stress relief, respiratory issues, and many other health conditions, as well as skin care, household cleaning products, and even as flavourings for food and beverages. However, choosing the right essential oil depends on several factors, including your specific needs, the quality of the oil, and how it will be used.

What Are the Characteristics of a Premium Quality Essential Oil?

When choosing essential oils, here’s what to look for:

  • Purity: Choose oils that are labelled “100% pure and natural” and are not diluted with cheaper oils, vegetable oils, or synthetic additives and fragrances.
  • Organic certification: It is essential to choose organic farming to minimize the risk of pesticide residues and other harmful chemicals in the essential oil.
  • Transparency: Trustworthy brands share information such as the country of origin of the product, the part of the plant used, and provide GC-MS, heavy metals, and other analyses carried out by independent laboratories to guarantee the chemotype (biochemical profile) and total integrity.
  • Therapeutic grade: Health Canada approval guarantees that the oils are effective and safe for health if the dosage indicated on the label is strictly followed.

Choosing the Right Essential Oil

For example:

  • Lavender essential oil is used in aromatherapy for its relaxing (sedative, calming) properties to help relieve nervousness, irritability, and worry and to promote sleep.
  • Peppermint essential oil is traditionally used to help relieve nausea and vomiting, as well as headaches.
  • Tea tree essential oil is used as a germicidal antiseptic to relieve minor skin irritations and abrasions.
  • Ravintsara essential oil is used in aromatherapy to temporarily relieve coughs due to colds.

How to Use Essential Oils

  • Diffusion: Add 5–10 drops to the water of an ultrasonic diffuser or 10–20 drops to a waterless diffuser.
  • Topical application: Following the instructions on the product label, dilute essential oils in a carrier oil and apply locally.
  • Steam inhalation: Add 4–12 drops into a large glass or stainless steel bowl containing 150–200 ml of steaming hot water. Lean over so that your face is directly above the water. Cover your head with a towel, close your eyes, and inhale deeply.
  • Bubble bath and shower gel: Create your favourite blend with 5–10 drops of essential oils (or use a single oil) and mix directly into 100 ml of unscented liquid soap (or liquid castile soap). Shake well and pour under full running water or, in the shower, use your wet hands or a loofah to rub the soap vigorously against your skin.
  • Household cleaning products: Add 10–20 drops of an essential oil of your choice to 1 L of warm or hot water + 1 tablespoon of baking soda + 2–4 tablespoons of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake well before use.

Lavender and Bergamot Pillow Mist

Pour the following ingredients into a glass bottle:

  • 5 ml of Emulsion emulsifier (1 teaspoon)
  • 30 drops of Organic Hybrid Lavender essential oil – Super type
  • 15 drops of Organic Bergamot essential oil
  • 90 ml of water (6 tablespoons)

Screw on the spray top and shake well before spraying on your pillow 5 minutes before going to bed.
